AI Engineer

An AI Engineer builds and ships production systems powered by machine learning and large language models. They turn models and APIs into reliable features by designing data pipelines, integrating models, writing evaluations and guardrails, and tuning latency and cost. The role blends software engineering discipline with applied AI judgment across the full deployment lifecycle.

Responsibilities

Integrate ML models and LLM APIs into user-facing product features
Build data and inference pipelines that are reliable in production
Design evaluation harnesses and guardrails to measure model quality
Optimize latency, throughput, and cost of AI services
Collaborate with data scientists and product managers on requirements
Monitor deployed models and set up alerting for drift and failures

Must-have skills

Strong Python and general software engineering fundamentals
Experience calling and orchestrating LLM or ML model APIs
Understanding of prompt design, RAG, and evaluation methods
Working knowledge of cloud services and containers
Ability to build and debug data pipelines

Nice-to-have skills

Fine-tuning or model-serving experience (vLLM, Triton)
Vector databases and embedding search
MLOps tooling such as MLflow or Weights & Biases
Frontend familiarity for shipping AI features end to end

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between an AI Engineer and a Machine Learning Engineer?
AI Engineers focus on integrating existing models and LLMs into products and shipping reliable features. Machine Learning Engineers lean more toward building, training, and optimizing the models themselves. The roles overlap heavily and titles vary by company.
Do AI Engineers need a machine learning PhD?
No. Most AI Engineer roles value strong software engineering plus applied ML skills over a research degree. A PhD helps for research-heavy positions but is rarely required to build production AI systems.
Which programming languages do AI Engineers use most?
Python dominates for model integration and pipelines, often paired with TypeScript or Go for services. SQL is essential for data work.
Is AI Engineering a good career in 2026?
Demand remains strong as more companies move AI prototypes into production. Engineers who can ship reliable, cost-efficient AI features are especially sought after.
